Khalil Gibran (Arabic pronunciation) born Gubran Khalil Gubran, was a Lebanese-American artist, poet, and writer. Born in the town of Bsharri in modern-day Lebanon (then part of the Ottoman Mount Lebanon mutasarrifate), as a young man he emigrated with his family to the United States where he studied art and began his literary career. In the Arab world, Gibran is regarded as a literary and political rebel. His Romantic style was at the heart of a renaissance in modern Arabic literature, especially prose poetry, breaking away from the classical school. In Lebanon, he is still celebrated as a literary hero. He is chiefly known in the English-speaking world for his 1923 book The Prophet, an early example of inspirational fiction including a series of philosophical essays written in poetic English prose. The book sold well despite a cool critical reception, gaining popularity in the 1930s and again especially in the 1960s counterculture. Gibran is the third best-selling poet of all time, behind Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu
In academic contexts his name is often spelled Jubrān Khalīl Jubrān,Jibrān Khalīl Jibrān, or Jibrān Xalīl Jibrān; Arabic جبران خليل جبران , January 6, 1883 – April 10, 1931) also known as Kahlil Gibran,

What Is Podcasting...?

A podcast is a type of digital media consisting of an episodic series of audio files subscribed to and downloaded through web syndication or streamed online to a computer or mobile device. The word is a neologism derived from "broadcast" and "pod" from the success of the iPod, as podcasts are often listened to on portable media players.
A list of all the audio or video files currently associated with a given series is maintained centrally on the distributor's server as a web feed, and the listener or viewer employs special client application software, known as a podcatcher, that can access this web feed, check it for updates, and download any new files in the series. This process can be automated so that new files are downloaded automatically. Files are stored locally on the user's computer or other device ready for offline use, giving simple and convenient access to episodic content. In this way it is contrasted to webcasting (Internet streaming).
As discussed by Richard Berry, podcasting is both a converged medium bringing together audio, the web and portable media player, and a disruptive technology that has caused some in the radio business to reconsider some established practices and preconceptions about audiences, consumption, production and distribution. This idea of disruptiveness is largely because no one person owns the technology; it is free to listen and create content, which departs from the traditional model of 'gate-kept' media and production tools. It is very much a horizontal media form: producers are consumers and consumers become producers and engage in conversations with each other.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As Internet based technologies have continued to improve and enhance our ability to communicate with one another globally, a transformation of the radio show form of media was destined to occur. The Internet world's form of broadcasting, known as podcasting, is the new face of radio journalism in a technology driven era. Despite podcasting's continued existence since 2004, many people are still unaware of what podcasts are and how podcasts can be obtained and listened to, a problem that can easily be addressed by following a few quick steps.

What Is A Podcast?

A podcast, simply put, is no different than a webcast, a show that is broadcast over the web and is broken up into parts or episodes. Most podcasts are similar to news radio programs and deliver information on a regular basis, while some podcasts are comedy shows, special music broadcasts or even gospel. Podcasts are most popular on Apple's iPod and iPhone devices, hence the name podcast, but a podcast can be enjoyed from a number of different sources and can even be listened to directly on a computer.

Using Podcasts in iTunes

For those who own Apple devices like iPods or are simply interested in enjoying podcasts from the computer, obtaining Apple's iTunes is an important first step. Apple offers free downloads of the iTunes software on their website if it is not already installed. An iTunes account must also be registered in order to access the online podcast library and other Internet based features of iTunes.
After iTunes has been initially set up podcasts can be downloaded directly in iTunes. Click on the Podcast Directory link to begin viewing the library of available podcasts. Click on any relevant podcast to expand it and see the episode listing. Single episodes may be selected or the entire podcast may be played by double-clicking on the podcast.
To find a specific podcast in iTunes, click on the arrow next to the Podcast Directory button. After clicking the arrow, type your search for the author, subject, or title of the podcast into the search box in the left column or at the top right of the iTunes screen.
Interested in saving a podcast? Clicking the Source button gives listeners a list of older podcasts that can be downloaded and saved in the iTunes library. Users can also configure options to determine how often new episodes should be downloaded making it easy to keep up to date with all of a listener's favorite podcasts.

Syncing Podcasts With an iPod

Podcast listeners wanting to get their podcast fix on the go can use iTunes to quickly and easily sync their podcasts with their Apple device. After subscribing to podcasts, plug an Apple device into the computer running iTunes. After iTunes recognizes the device, click on the device's icon in the left-hand column to access the device settings. Clicking on the podcast tab will present the user with number of options to configure which podcasts should be synced to the device every time the device is connected and which podcasts should be automatically updated, making podcasts easy to manage in the device's library. Users may even specify how many episodes of each podcast they want to keep synced with the device at any given time, helping conserve disk space on the iPod.
After syncing podcasts with an iPod, they can be accessed in the iPod's library under the "Podcast" directory and can be played just like any music file stored on the device.

Using Podcasts With Other Media Player Software

Some users prefer to listen to their podcasts with software alternatives to iTunes. To listen to podcasts located on iTunes in another media player, right-click on any podcast in iTunes and select the "Copy Podcast URL" option. This URL can be copied into the address bar of most media players. For podcasts found elsewhere on the Internet, simply right click the link to the podcast and choose to "Copy Link Information" to obtain another URL that can be copied to other media players.

DIGITAL RADIO TRIAL IN CANBERRA

ABC RADIO IS NOW DIGITAL

Following the announcement in August 2011 by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) confirming it would extend the current digital radio trial being undertaken in Canberra until 31 July 2012, a range your favourite ABC Radio services have started broadcasting on digital radio in Canberra. Those services are: 666 ABC Canberra, ABC Radio National, ABC Jazz, ABC Grandstand and triple j Unearthed.
Digital Radio is an established broadcast platform in the UK, Europe and parts of Asia and Australia has started to switch on to digital radio, the next generation of radio broadcasting.
Digital Radio is not replacing current services; it simply provides another choice in how to receive your ABC Radio.

ON AIR. ON LINE. ON DIGITAL RADIO

To listen to the ABC on digital radio you will need to purchase a digital radio receiver. These are also known as DAB+ receivers. DAB stands for Digital Audio Broadcasting and DAB+ is the digital radio technology standard for Australia. Digital radios are being stocked by leading electronics retailers and the ABC Shop online.
It's not just the ABC that is available on digital radio. SBS, commercial and community broadcasters are also part of this digital evolution.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DIGITAL RADIO?

GREAT SOUND

Digital radio delivers better sound quality than traditional AM and FM radio.

BETTER RECEPTION

Digital radio offers interference-free, digital-quality sound. The digital radio receiver locks onto the strongest signal in your area to provide crystal clear reception

MORE CHOICE

As well as the existing stations 666 ABC Canberra and ABC Radio National, the ABC is offering three new digital radio stations - ABC Jazz, ABC Grandstand and triple j Unearthed.

EASY TUNING

No need to remember your favourite station's frequency. You can tune by station name. Simply scroll through the list of stations and with one touch, you're tuned and listening to your ABC.

PAUSE AND REWIND

Some digital radio receivers are able to store the program you're listening to and let you pause and rewind the program for a few minutes. It is also possible to store it for later listening via a memory card. No need to miss the news, sports results or weather. Just pause and rewind

ON SCREEN INFORMATION

Digital radios have small screens which can display program-related information, such as 'now playing' details. In Canberra this will only be available as text, due to the amount of bandwidth available. News headlines, weather details, traffic updates and so on can also be provided on-screen.

WHAT'S ON OFFER FROM ABC?

  • 666 ABC Canberra
  • ABC Radio National
  • ABC Jazz
  • ABC Grandstand

Tribute to a Man with a Vision

John Lennon, like so many visionaries
was a man who lived and thought
way ahead of his time.
But such is this world’s cruelty and insensitivity
that
for thinking many steps ahead of lesser minds
he had to pay the price with his life.
Still, even in their absence
such great men keep making waves
and giving food for thought
for those among us who are sensitive enough
to perceive the wisdom
of their far-reaching visions.

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

RNTC is an international training institute serving media professionals working in broadcast, print and online media. RNTC has over 40 years of experience in short focused courses tailored to the needs of mid-career professionals in journalism and media.
With our network of highly qualified and experienced  trainers we provide a wide variety of international courses for journalists, programme-makers, broadcast trainers and managers in Hilversum, The Netherlands. All are open to self-paying and sponsored participants; for certain courses fellowships are available to eligible applicants. Our certificates are recognised and respected all over the world.
Media organisations can invite RNTC to design tailor-made courses for their employees, to be given on the spot, or in Hilversum. For organisations in some 60 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America third-party funding is now available for these capacity-building activities.
In everything we offer, our guiding principle is ‘learning by doing’.
In short, RNTC designs and implements training solutions to meet the needs of the media world.
